Virginia Tech Buildings

Most campus buildings have mechanical rooms, elevator machinery rooms, or roof access, for the entertainment of the intrepid Urban Explorer.

Mechanical rooms are usually on the lowest or highest level, and are interesting because they contain the electrical, heating, and cooling equipment that keep a building habitable. They are also generally off-limits, even though they are rarely locked. Mechanical rooms sometimes also provide access to the steam tunnel network, crawlspaces under the buildings, or to the rooftops.

Crawlspaces can be interesting to explore, and a few connect to the steam tunnels. However, most of the crawlspaces in the older buildings still have a large amount of asbestos in them.

Elevator rooms are usually locked however, but they are neat when you can find one that isn't. The display of sparks from a DC traction motor is an awesome sight. Be careful though.

A few buildings also have unlocked roof access. However, this usually only happens when someone has been working on the roof and forgot to lock up. Campus roofs offer some amazing views, but there are the inherent dangers of falling, being spotted, and toxic fumes being vented out onto the roofs.
