The Belle Isle hydro plant is located on an island in the middle of the James River, in Richmond, Virginia.

Yes, I know that this place is 4 hours away from Virginia Tech, but it's still kinda cool.

The power plant was built in the beginning of the century, to provide power for Richmond's streetcar system. It was later incorporated into the regular power grid, until floods forced its closure in the late 1960's. The plant had three generators, housed in a large square building. A smaller building next door contained electrical switchgear.

Today, the buildings are empty, save for an impressive amount of graffiti.
