The now-abandoned Blue Ridge Hospital (BRH) was founded by the Commonwealth of Virginia  in 1920, as a tuberculosis sanitarium. It was originally called the Blue Ridge Sanitarium, and was built on the site of the former Moore's Brook Sanatorium. It was operated by the state until 1978, when it was handed over to UVA. The school operated the site as the Blue Ridge Hospital until 1996, when it was closed down.

For more information on the History of BRH, check out this excellent website.

BRH is a pretty large complex. It has several huge buildings, many small buildings, a power plant, a sewage treatment plant, a chapel, and a dairy farm (all abandoned). The site is in rough shape: the Lynman Mansion in the center of the complex is collapsing, and many of the buildings have a danger of asbestos. Almost all of the buildings are boarded up, and UVA employees are frequently out there. Also, police and ROTC use the complex for urban training.
